990-EZ deadline & penalties

Know your due date, understand late filing risk, and protect your nonprofit’s tax-exempt status.

Filing deadline

Form 990-EZ is due on the 15th day of the 5th month after the end of your nonprofit’s tax year.

Quick example
If your tax year ends December 31, your 990-EZ is typically due May 15.

Late filing penalties

  • Daily penalties for late filing
  • Public compliance risk (990 filings are often reviewed by donors and grant makers)
  • Loss of tax-exempt status after 3 missed years
High risk: 3 consecutive missed years
If a required annual return is not filed for three consecutive years, the IRS may automatically revoke tax-exempt status.

How to stay compliant

  • Set an annual reminder tied to your tax year end date
  • Save your submission confirmation and keep it with board records
  • Re-check each year whether you should file 990-N, 990-EZ, or 990
