How to File a 990-N

Form 990-N, also known as the e-Postcard, is an annual IRS filing for small tax-exempt organizations. Most small nonprofits with gross receipts normally $50,000 or less can file Form 990-N instead of the longer Form 990 or Form 990-EZ.

Even if your nonprofit does not owe federal income tax, it may still need to file an annual return to keep its tax-exempt status in good standing.

Step 1: Confirm Your Nonprofit Is Eligible

Before filing, make sure your organization qualifies for Form 990-N. In general, Form 990-N is for small tax-exempt organizations with gross receipts normally $50,000 or less.

If your organization has more than $50,000 in gross receipts, you may need to file Form 990-EZ or Form 990 instead. Check your non-profit's eligibility here: Pro990 EIN Search Tool

Step 2: Gather Your Information

Before you begin, collect the basic information needed to file, including:

  • Organization name
  • EIN
  • Mailing address
  • Website, if applicable
  • Principal officer information
  • Tax year
  • Confirmation that gross receipts are normally $50,000 or less
  • Confirmation that the organization is still active

Step 3: File Online

Step 4: Save Your Filing Confirmation

After submitting your 990-N, save a copy of your filing confirmation for your records. This is especially important for nonprofits with rotating officers, treasurers, board members, or volunteers.

When Is Form 990-N Due?

Form 990-N is due every year by the 15th day of the 5th month after the close of your nonprofit’s tax year. For organizations using a calendar year, the deadline is usually May 15. If your organization has a 7/1-6/30 filing period, you are able to file on or after 7/1, due by Nov 15th.
