Filing Deadlines for 2025 990N

When Is My 2025 990-N e-Postcard Due?

It depends on your organization's filing period. This would have been established when you intially submitted your 1023 or 1024 application for tax-exempt status and is acknowledged in your determination letter that will have been issued by the IRS upon approval of tax-exemption.

The IRS rule states that the filing is due 5 months and 15 days after the end of your filing period. Below is the general due date schedule based on all 12 potential filing periods that can be applicable for the 2025 990-N return.

How To Determine Your Organization's Filing Period

There are a few ways to determine this. If you have your organization's determination letter on-hand, it will display your Accounting Period Ending date. This is the last day of your filing period.

  • For example: If your organization's Accounting Period Ending date is 12/31, you will file for 1/1/25-12/31/26, due by 5/15/26.
  • If your Accounting Period Ending date is 6/30, you will file for 7/1/25-6/30/26.

I'm filing in 2026. Why Do I Need a 2025 990-N?

The IRS rule states that the "Filing Year" is determined by the Beginning Date on the return, not the date on which the return is submitted and/or due.

For example: If you're filing a fiscal period of 7/1/25-6/30/26, even though your filing period ends in 2026 and your filing is not due until 11/15/26, it is considered a 2025 return because the begin-date in in calendar year 2025.

This can be further confusing for organizations with more uncommon fiscal filing periods such as 12/1/25-11/30/26. Even though 11 of the 12 months occurred in 2026, the begin-date rule still dictates that you file a 2025 return, due by April 15th, 2027.

We've made it simple for you!

We understand that officers can change at least annually, and in some cases even more frequently. It can be intimidating and confusing the 1st time you file.
